Who says we have to choose between brains or brawn?

With September now here, a new study suggests it might be wise to put workout clothes at the top of your back-to-school shopping list.

According to studies, those who want better grades should incorporate more physical activity to improve their brain functioning.

We all know the importance of daily exercise, but acing your next test is just the cherry on top.

Dr. Scott Leith, Goodlife Fitness’s data scientist and research psychologist, says exercise has the power to create “more efficient brains.”

This means not just having a high IQ but also high levels of executive function, according to researchers at the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Leith says a trio of thinking skills — multi-tasking, working memory and self-control — are responsible for such brainpower and are heightened during and after exercise.

Combined they can provide the strongest results in class for writing tests, reading and retaining new information.

Adding a workout to your daily routine will also help with focus, stress levels, speed and flexibility of thought, neuron growth, and overall academic performance.

“After-school exercise programs have been shown to increase white matter integrity in areas associated with focus and self control,” said Leith.

“This means the connections between neurons are more well-insulated, allowing signals in the brain to travel with greater strength and speed.”

Exercise also increases the size of the hippocampus — the part of the brain responsible for learning, memory and spatial navigation.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence, some researchers speculate it might play an important role for children learning math and arithmetic.

So what kind of exercise should you be getting?

Leith says it just needs to be “cognitive engaging,” involving some difficulty and some form of strategy.

Physical activities release large amounts of dopamine — the chemical in our brains that make us feel happy — which makes us more motivated and enthusiastic.

Playing sports is great for both your body and mind since it’s normally goal-orientated and requires the player to think ahead.

For kids in school, one hour of gym class is a good start but it’s better for them to join extracurricular activities that emphasize physical education.

Recent studies suggest struggling kids benefit the most from daily exercise.

A study from the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders had 17 children (kindergarten to Grade 3) participate in moderate-to-vigorous exercise for 26 minutes over an eight-week program at school.

Among the young participants, roughly 64% to 71% showed signs of behavioural improvements that targeted ADHD symptoms.
