TertiaryButylhydroquinone (??) carmine (crushed beetles, for red colour!), maltodextrin (additive that adversely affects gut biome), various preservatives that deserve to be in funeral parlours only, and other colourings that will worsen ADHD/ADD…

Then there’s the 71% sugar!

No wonder they’re cheap. Even at that price our UK sweets are better value because they rely on simple/quality ingredients for taste (same for our unbleached chicken etc!).

People don’t realise. Thinking as it’s available to buy openly it must be safe. It goes for many products including a lot of drink and food. Specially sugar replacement and a lot of meat products. But this is a different debate.

They’re right, and if people are stupid enough to cut their own noses off to spite their face it doesn’t say much for the Great British education system.

And, I’m NOT a limpy lefty liberal – it’s got nothing to do with liberalism – it’s about uncaring people treating other people like crap by feeding them poison (no different from drug dealers selling their poisons).

Cochineal / carmine is a particularly odd one to pick out since it’s been in use for decades now, including widespread use in the UK, and is EU approved.

Strange to claim a blanket statement that uk sweets are across the board completely natural/less junk filled, thats clearly not true and what about crushed up beetles? that would be the healthiest part of any sweets, insects are basically a superfood, tho i doubt they use the whole beetle and probably just the fairly un-nutritious shell i guess, but it wouldnt be “bad”.

Good point. Insects are widely eaten in Asia with a growing interest elsewhere.

Why

1. Super cheap to farm. One apple can feed a lot of crickets.

2. Produce next to no carbon footprint.

3. They contain more protein than beef.

I believe they made cakes using ‘cricket flour’ and tried them in some schools and the kids really enjoyed them.

Most of the sweets you get over here now are tasteless. All the stuff I used to eat as a kid has had all the artificial colourings and flavours removed and taste like chalk. I’ll have to get some of these to try out.

The American public have been getting more and more unhappy with the quality of ‘candy’ being thrown at them – there’s been a massive shift to more healthy options. A persistent downward flow of ever dwindling ‘candy’ sales has resulted in many companies giving up the ghost and selling up – including Nestle. There’s real change afoot in the States; maybe the candy companies think they can flog their unsold crud here.

If you shovel this stuff down your neck on a regular basis you’ve pretty much given up on your health so why argue the details

You are missing a few points. US have very strong defense lawyers/teams so sometimes ‘win’ cases they shouldn’t.

But the main point is if your hygiene standards are sufficiently good you don’t need to chlorine wash poultry in the first place.

Personally I don’t care if the UK imports chlorinated washed chicken as long as any products that contain it have to display a label stating chicken imported from USA (and if they use an intermediary country).

Labelling is shocking, I bought chicken the other day and after assuming it was British with the words British chicken it was actually only packed here

it originated from Romania…. can’t say I will be purchasing again.

But you ignore the main reason behind the concern. The chlorine itself isn’t actually the issue. As you correctly point out it’s in other things as well. The issue is the reason why the chickens are chlorine washed – the abysmally unhealthy farming practices used in the USA, eg not cleaning out between broods being raised, resulting in massive bacteriological infestations of the chickens.
